How to Encourage Healthy Communication in Grandfamilies

I know that love and support aren’t enough to make grandfamilies strong because I’ve worked with Grand Families UTAH. Good communication is important for a happy home, especially when grandparents are the main caregivers. From Sugar House to West Valley City, I’ve seen how open communication can change family life and make everyone feel heard and respected in our Utah communities.

Why Grandfamilies Should Talk to Each Other in a Good Way

It can be hard for grandparents to take care of their grandchildren. We have a mix of opinions from people of different ages, things that have happened to us in the past, and sometimes, family problems that haven’t been solved. That’s why it’s so important to make healthy communication a priority. It makes it possible for people to trust and understand each other, which is good for mental health.

Grand Families UTAH believes that families should talk to each other often. These talks give everyone a safe space to talk about how they feel, ask questions, or voice their concerns. I have seen that kids and grandparents feel closer to each other when we talk openly, like at the dinner table or on a walk in Liberty Park.

Helpful Advice for Grandfamilies on How to Communicate

One of the most important things I’ve learned is that people in grandfamilies talk to each other. We can begin by listening without passing judgment. A child or teen’s trust grows when they feel like they are being heard. I always tell caregivers that it’s okay if they don’t know everything. Sometimes, just telling your grandchild that you understand how they feel is enough.

Another good thing to do is to talk about how we feel calmly and honestly. Grand Families UTAH says that saying “I feel” can help people get to know each other better. Instead of blaming or accusing, it’s better to say something like “I get worried when you come home late.” This method makes a good environment where everyone feels free to speak up.

Staying consistent is also important. Setting clear rules for talking, like agreeing to talk about problems before they get worse, can help calm people down. I see a lot of families benefit from these routines in our Salt Lake City workshops. Talking to each other is less stressful and more helpful when we know what to expect.

How we talk to each other has a big impact on how we feel. From what I’ve seen, grandfamilies that talk about both good and bad things regularly are better at solving problems together. We tell families at Grand Families UTAH to check in with each other a lot, especially when things are hard or changing.

It’s also important to know when you need help from someone else. Getting help from local support services or counseling in Utah neighborhoods can make a big difference if you and your family can’t talk to each other or if things get tense during family discussions. We have resources in South Jordan, Murray, and other places to help families with grandparents get along better.

Questions that people ask a lot

What should I do if my grandchild doesn’t want to talk to me?
I think you should start by having short, casual conversations and showing that you care about their daily life. Be patient. Talking to them openly over time can help them feel more at ease about sharing.

What should I do when family talks turn into arguments?
Try to stay calm and see things from each other’s point of view. Set rules for polite conversation, and don’t forget that it’s okay to take a break and talk again later.

Are there tools in your area that can help you talk to people better?
Of course. Grand Families UTAH has workshops and support groups all over Salt Lake County. Many neighborhoods also have community centers that have activities for grandfamilies.
